How to Feel More Comfortable in Front of the Camera

For many of us, the idea of stepping in front of a camera can bring on a wave of awkwardness. “What do I do with my hands?”, “Will I look too posed?”, “I hate having my photo taken!” – sound familiar?

Whether it’s for your business, your family, or even just a special occasion, it’s completely normal to feel a little uneasy at the thought of being professionally photographed. But I promise – it doesn’t have to be uncomfortable.

Over the years, I’ve worked with many people (and plenty of animals!) who started their shoot feeling nervous, and ended it laughing, relaxed, and often surprised at just how easy and enjoyable the experience was.

Here are five practical tips to help you feel more confident and at ease in front of the camera:

1. Wear something that makes you feel like you

Choosing an outfit that you feel good in is key. If you’re constantly tugging at a top or adjusting a waistband, it’ll show in your expressions. Go for clothes that make you feel comfortable and confident.

As part of your shoot prep, I’ll send you a guide with tips on what to wear (including how to add pops of colour, texture, or subtle branding touches) to help you feel your best.

2. Bring props or items that help you feel relaxed

This could be a cup of coffee, your favourite notebook, a scarf, or something you’d naturally have with you in real life. Props give your hands something to do and help create more natural, relaxed images. For branding shoots, I’ll guide you through this as part of the planning process.

3. Avoid the awkward grin – try this instead

One of my favourite tips (and my top trick for avoiding stiff, awkward smiles!) is:
Take a deep breath, then look at the camera and smile.
That moment of exhale relaxes your face, softens your eyes, and leads to a far more natural expression than a forced “say cheese!” grin.

4. Add some movement

If standing still makes you feel too self-aware, introducing some movement can really help. My family shoots are full of games which introduce movement to the images but this is equally applicable for brand shoots too. You can gently tuck your hair behind your ear, walk slowly towards the camera, turn slightly to the side or lean forward a little. These small movements can make a big difference to how relaxed and real the final photos feel.

5. Practise beforehand

This might sound a bit silly – but honestly, try practising a few poses or smiles in the mirror. It’s a great way to explore what feels most natural to you and helps you feel a little more in control on the day. You don’t need to rehearse anything perfectly – just becoming more aware of what feels like “you” will help.

I’m here to help you feel at ease

If you’re booking a shoot with me, I’ll always send over a preparation guide beforehand. It covers everything from what to wear, what to bring, and how to ease yourself into the experience. I’ll also gently guide you throughout the shoot so you’re never left wondering what to do next – no awkward posing, no pressure, and absolutely no need to be anything other than yourself.

And if you’re still unsure – let’s have a chat. I’d be happy to talk you through what to expect and how I can tailor the session to suit you.
