What to Wear for a Bluebell Photoshoot in Durham

Bluebell season is one of the most beautiful times of year for outdoor family photoshoots. For a short window each spring, woodland floors are transformed into a sea of soft purple flowers and fresh green leaves, creating a magical backdrop for natural, relaxed family portraits.

If you’ve booked a bluebell photoshoot in Durham — or you’re thinking about it — one of the most common questions I’m asked is: what should we wear for bluebell photos?

The good news is that it doesn’t need to be complicated. The most important thing is that everyone feels comfortable and like themselves. If you’re tugging at clothes, worrying about shoes or wearing something that just doesn’t feel “you”, it tends to show. That said, clothing choices can definitely affect the overall look of your photos, so a little planning goes a long way.

Colours That Work Beautifully for Bluebell Photos

Soft Neutrals

Cream, ivory, soft grey, beige and oatmeal tones always photograph beautifully in woodland settings. These shades feel classic, flattering and won’t compete with the bluebells.

Pastels

Soft pinks, dusty blues, gentle lilacs, sage green and buttery yellows all work wonderfully in spring. They add colour while still keeping the overall look soft and natural.

Muted Blues and Greens

Subtle blues and greens complement the woodland surroundings and create a calm, harmonious feel in your images.

Earthy Tones

Olive green, warm tan, rust and soft browns can look gorgeous in the woods and add warmth to your photos.

Colours Best Avoided

Bright Reds

Bold reds can clash with the purple tones of the bluebells and draw attention away from faces.

Neon Colours

Very bright or fluorescent shades can overpower the natural beauty of the setting.

Very Dark Colours

Black or deep navy can sometimes feel heavy against such a light, fresh spring backdrop.

Busy Patterns and Large Logos

Patterns, slogans and logos can date quickly and distract from the people in the photograph.

What Should Families Wear for Bluebell Photos?

Co-ordinate Rather Than Match

Choose a colour palette of two or three complementary shades rather than everyone wearing exactly the same thing. This creates a more natural, polished look.

For example:

  • Cream + sage + denim
  • Oatmeal + dusty pink + soft grey
  • Olive + beige + pale blue
Add Layers

Late April and early May can still feel chilly, especially in woodland shade. Cardigans, knit jumpers, jackets and gilets can look lovely in photos and give variety to your gallery.

Choose Practical Footwear

We’ll be using woodland paths, so comfort matters. Boots, trainers or practical shoes are ideal — and it’s wise to expect a little mud just in case.

What to Wear for Children’s Bluebell Photos

Children photograph beautifully in simple, comfortable outfits they can move in easily. Think knitted jumpers, dungarees, cotton dresses, chinos, leggings or relaxed layers in soft colours.

Most importantly: choose something they feel happy in and can run, explore and cuddle in comfortably.

What to Wear for Dog Photos in the Bluebells

Yes — dogs are welcome at my bluebell mini sessions.

If possible, a simple traditional collar photographs best and keeps the look nice and timeless. If your dog normally wears a harness, don’t worry at all — we can absolutely still work with it.

Bringing a few treats always helps, and if your dog has a favourite bandana in a colour that fits the palette, even better.
